5 Places to Motorcycle to on a Weekend

My article Weekend Easy Riders on places you can motorcycle to from Manila on a weekend is out in today’s issue of Sunday Inquirer Magazine.

A lot of these are in the Rizal/Laguna area since it’s easy enough to drive to via the Marilaque route. Below are a few more photos of the places featured that didn’t make it to the magazine due to space constraints. Take note that travel times really vary on the routes you take, traffic and your speed.

Daranak and Batlag Falls

  • Location: Tanay, Rizal
  • Travel time: 1.5 to 2 hours
  • Good for: swimming, picnics, sightseeing

Daranak Falls

Batlag Falls

Trivia: Daranak Falls has been featured in several local movies and TV shows, including OK Ka Fairy Ko! and Encantadia.

Kawayan Farm

  • Location: Km 63 East Road, Brgy. Halahayin, Pililla, Rizal
  • Travel time: 2 hours
  • Good for: sightseeing, dining, massage

Kawayan Farm

Sisig, Crispy Fried Hito and Kawayan Farm’s pet monkey

Trivia: House specialties in Kawayan Farm’s restaurant include labong (a spicy Bicol express Dish using bamboo shoots) and lumpia (an egg roll filled with lettuce and bamboo shoots.)

Paete, Laguna

  • Travel time: 2 hours
  • Good for: sightseeing, buying handicrafts, snacks
Ang Buhay at Hugis sa Paete , a shop selling papier-mache products

Figurine of a saint, Paete Church and a woodrcaft artist at work

Trivia: Artisans from Paete have produced sculptures, pulpits, murals and bas reliefs that are found in churches, palaces and museums all over the world including St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome.

Caliraya Lake

  • Location: Cavinti, Laguna
  • Travel time: 2.5 hours
  • Good for: boating, fishing, overnight camping

The Alamat Crewsers on their way to CaliRana resort

Trivia: Caliraya lake’s surroundings have been compared to North American resorts because of the number of pine trees which were introduced by early developers to replace coconut trees, as well as the cool climate in the area.

Pagsanjan Falls, Cavinti, Laguna

  • Travel time: 2.5 to 3 hours
  • Good for: sightseeing, boating
A small waterfall on the way to Pagsanjan, the gorge, and snacks for sale at a midway point
Trivia: The last part of the 1979 movie Apocalypse Now directed by Francis Ford Copolla and set during the Vietnam War was shot in Pagsanjan Falls.

If there are any riders out there who have suggestions on other destinations that would be great to visit via motorcycle, let me know!

  1. i like this post. i just bought my scooter and im planning to travel around the country with it. Right now im still looking for places over the web to go to and this article is really helpful for me. Thank you for writing this informative article.

    • Hi Supertikoy. Will check when the best time to go to Daranak is. I’ve been to other falls that aren’t so great depending on the season and if it’s rainy, the water turns muddy. Batlag falls is really nice though. 🙂

  2. Hi Ms. Kara!

I’m so inspired upon reading your articles..! I’m an engineer and motorcycle lover for almost 4 years now, (though I don’t have a bike at a moment). Its just majority of women around don’t usually fond of driving a motorcycle/scooter and sometimes discourage me to ride (especially for a 5-footer like me).

My eyes can’t help not to glance on the motorcycles passing on the streets. Just few months ago I Iove travelling with my Honda Beat. However, due to some circumstances I stopped this hobby and given my Beat to my Brother.

But upon reading your articles, the urged to have a bike and tour around kick in again! I’m planning to have a Honda Scoopy (as my new “Little Boy”) maybe by next month and have trips with friends on some places you featured here. Thanks for the inspiration.

    Keep writing. 🙂

  3. Just few concerns on motorcyclist not to make the area a race track. I am bi-cyclist and often motorcyclist don’t give enough space and don’t slow down when passing a cyclist. Hope we share the road to others and enjoy the scenery.

    • Hi Tong. I also enjoy riding a bicycle and it is really sad that some motorcyclists have made Marilaque a race track of sorts. I’ve heard of really bad accidents along this public highway. Like you, I also ride to enjoy the scenery (and I stop a lot to take photos). I always hate encountering racing groups when I ride alone.

  5. It’s fun reading all your blog stuffs here specially in Rizal – btw I’m from Rizal too, Race track in Marilaque – actually this is a practice ground for people who love and like curve circuits.
This PALO ALTO FALLS definitely will include this to my list in our next joy ride. Keep writing. #SccotUserMIO

    • Hi Jhigs. Am not from Rizal, but I do like to motorcycle there during weekends. Lots of undiscovered places and it’s not as crowded as some other areas 🙂 Thanks for dropping by my blog.
