Bali’s Temple of the Holy Water

Pura Tirta Empul or Bali’s Temple of the Holy Water is regarded as one of six most important temples in Bali, Indonesia. Located in Tampak Siring, a town in Central Bali, this temple is known for its sacred spring that is believed to have curative properties.

According to Sacred Destinations, legend has it that the sacred spring was created by the god Indra. “His forces had been poisoned by Mayadanawa, so he pierced the earth to create a fountain of immortality to revive them. An inscription dates the founding of a temple at the site to 926 AD. Ever since – for more than a thousand years – the Balinese have come to bathe in the sacred waters for healing and spiritual merit.”

Though I’m far from being a religious person, visiting this temple in the Island of the Gods was really a spiritual experience. Here are a few photos from my brief morning visit.

Visiting temples is just of the many activities you can do in Bali. Check out Leisure + Adventure TRAVEL Magazine’s Bucket List Issue out this month for my full feature. 😉
