Palo Alto Falls & Leisure Park in Baras, Rizal

On the first day of 2014, I took a solo motorcycle ride as a “good luck ride” for the year ahead. I ended up finding a very nice waterfall not that far from the city. This relatively unknown waterfall that’s just an hour away from the Quezon City area is a promising weekend destination for motorcyclists and mountain bikers.

The waterfall can be found within the Palo Alto Leisure and Residential Estates in Brgy. Pinugay, Baras, Rizal. This 200 hectare prime residential and commercial estate is being developed by the Sta. Lucia Land Inc. They’re currently selling estate lots here, for those who want to invest in their retirement farms or country estate mansions not that far from the metro. But in the meantime, some of the attractions, including the falls and a clubhouse are open to the public.

It’s hard to miss since there’s actually a billboard advertising an adventure park right by the side of the road with a picture of a waterfall on it. I ignored this during previous rides, since I assumed the photo was of Daranak or Batlag Falls–two popular waterfalls in Rizal, which I’ve previously been to. There are no entrance fees if you just want to inquire or take a look at the facilities. Just leave an ID with the guard at the main gate, and follow the paved road to your preferred destination (falls or clubhouse).

The place is ideal for motorcyclists and road trippers who want to go swimming and have picnics during the weekends. By car or motorcycle, the drive takes about an hour or less from QC without traffic. For mountain bikers, it’s more of a challenge, with the uphill ascents, but at least they can relax and cool down after a tiring ride. The whole complex has very good paved roads and secure parking areas for all types of vehicles.

Second visit to Palo Alto: Went back to show the place to Outside Slacker & take better photos with SLR

FALLS

From the parking area, you have to climb up 249 concrete steps to get to the foot of Palo Alto Falls, which is 1000 feet up. It sounds daunting at first, but really, it takes just about 5-8 minutes to get to the foot of the falls. Along the way, you’ll pass through thick forests beside a small stream, with water trickling down through the rocks. It’s very serene and peaceful, especially if you’re the only one there.

palo alto falls walkway forest palo alto falls walkway streamSoon enough, you’ll reach a set of native cottages surrounding the foot of the falls. The falls is still surrounded by lush trees and foliage and cascades down from about 60 feet high into a clear pool that has been cemented all around. The water here is very clean and clear, the grounds are well-maintained, and the place is really refreshing. What I like the most is its seclusion, unlike some other more popular waterfalls, which can get quite crowded. During my first visit, I was the only one there, so I had the falls all to myself. During my second visit to take photos, there were a few people swimming, but it didn’t feel crowded.

CLUBHOUSE

The other alternative (especially if you’re traveling with kids) is the leisure park’s clubhouse, which has a large resort-type swimming pool with winding water slides. The place looks very classy with landscaped gardens, relaxing lounge chairs, and a small bridge over the pool. There’s a large shower area with lockers and dressing rooms.

The clubhouse contains a game room where you can play billiards, table tennis, and darts. I spotted a videoke machine on the premises, so that’s probably for rent :p The clubhouse also contains a conference/function room for events, a zip line (over the pool), basketball court, and bike lane within the complex. The restaurant, snack bar & coffee shop are still in the works, so anyone who visits should make sure to bring their own food and snacks. Take note that alcoholic drinks are not allowed. There are several picnic huts for rent and grills where you can barbecue your own food by the pool.

If you didn’t bring food and want something to eat, you can visit Park, Rest & Dine, a small and eclectic restaurant, which is a short drive away from Palo Alto. Here’s a list of other resorts/restaurants along the route.

THIRD VISIT: Summer 2014

Went back with cousins (by car this time) for a summer picnic outing. The waterfalls was barely a trickle this time.

  5. thanks for sharing this, Ms. Kara! akala ko din dati daranak falls yung nasa poster. we went there last weekend 🙂

  6. Hi! Nice pictures! Very inviting! How to get there from Marcos Highway? and ilang hrs travel time going there? I need sana clear directions on how to get there by car. Hoping for your immediate response. Thank you very much!

  7. Hi Drixx, thanks. I mentioned in the post that travel time there by car & motorcycle takes about an hour or less from QC without traffic. Just go straight along Marcos Highway, past Cogeo market and follow the road until you see the billboard on the right side of the road. It’s before you reach Garden Cottages or Sierra Madre Resort, if you’re familiar with those.

  8. Hello po mr jomar, pano po naman kung pabalik? From palto to sakayan na ng jeep? Hehe thanks. We are planning po kasi to go there this saturday, may nagsabi po samin na parang walang way pabalik. Hope youll po respond asap, 😀

  11. mam,
ask ko lang po kung pwedeng walk-in lang o dapat magreservation pa. balak po namin pumunta dyan sa April 26, 2014.

    thanks po

  12. Hi Kara. Do you think there is still enough water to the falls at this time of the year? You said you went there last January, a wetter month than April. We plan to go this weekend… Thanks.

  13. Hi Neil. I went again with relatives for a picnic mid-March and the water at the falls was barely a trickle, so you might be a little disappointed because it looks different from the poster. Ganun talaga pag summer months. You can still swim at the base of the falls though. We stayed in the clubhouse/pool area instead.

  14. Are there any swimwear restrictions sa falls/clubhouse? What time do they open/close? thanks in advance..

  15. Hi John, you can bring your own food pang picnic kasi wala pa silang restaurant though there’s a store selling chips and drinks (medyo mahal). May grill/ihawan dun sa pool area na pwedeng gamitin.

  16. Open po ba kayo bukas??then anong oras po ang open ung sa falls for swimming..thanks

  17. Ask ko lang for any contact # . Balak kasi namin pumunta these holyweek. thanks

  18. Hi Kara, thanks for all this info about the hidden beauties of Rizal, just a question thou, you think Palo Alto is open next week, during holy week? Im planning of doing a road trip for the family.

    Thanks,
    Crissy

  19. hi ms. kara.. tanong ko lang po bukas po kaya sila this holy week? plan po kasi namin pumunta . thanks po and God bless

  20. hi maam,

can i have your contact no.landline if possible. we would like to know rates for nightswimming

  21. yung sa falls po gano po kalalim? is it the same po ba sa daranak falls na mabato? thank you.

  22. Please read the comments section. An agent from Palo Alto already gave instructions how to commute to the place. Ride a jeep or FX from Cubao to Cogeo Gate 2 / Padilla. From Gate 2, ride a jeep to Sampaloc, Tanay. Get down at Palo Alto gate.

  23. Hi, Ms. Erick, pwede po dumaan ng tanay via tanay raod, 21 kms. with ur own car. Klangan po kabisado nyo ang way para d kyo maligaw.
Kng magcommute, sakay muna ng papuntang sampalok tanay, 3 kms. Then from sampaloc take cogeo gate 2 jeep, 22 kms. dadaan n po ito ng palo alto gate.

  24. good day mam! may alam po ba kayong daan from antipolo area to palo alto? commute lang sana kami, and more of walktrip, ask ko lang din kung possible bang way from baras (babaan ng jeep from antipolo) to palo alto kung maglalakad kami? or kung may masasakyan man po? We called the tourism office po kasi ang sabi eh wala daw naglalakad sa area na yun and mas advisable daw ang may kotse, kaso we were only two students na daytrip lang ang hanap and preferred and walktrip. thanks po for the reply!.

  25. Hi Nikki. I think you should take the advice of the tourism office 🙂 Unless of course “The Walking Dead” ang peg niyo for your walktrip. Medyo malayo yan. There are lots of other areas you can go to. Why don’t you try a walking tour around Pinto Art Museum in Antipolo? 🙂 They have a special rate for students. Just bring your ID. Ok din ang walking tour and food trip in Binondo.

  26. Yes mam. Unang destination namin yung for the day yung pinto art. so kung sakali po mam, possible pa din pong maglakad? wala naman pong nagbabawal? 🙂 and how long po kaya ang daan? 🙂 THANKS MAM KARA.

  27. It really makes more sense to commute or have your own transpo. It might take you a really long time to walk. By motorcycle, that takes about 1 hour. Kahit sa mga nagbibiseklata papunta diyan, it takes 2.5 – 3 hours depending on the pace. Anyway, here’s a map from Pinto Art Gallery to Palo Alto kung gusto niyo talaga maglakad. Est. 27 km. Why not just walk to the other sites in the Antipolo area like Hinulugang Taktak, churches, Jardin de Miramar, etc. 🙂 Just a friendly suggestion.

  28. Ay mam, what I mean is walk from babaan ng jeep ng Antipolo-Baras, from Baras na po kami maglalakad to Palo Alto. yun po sana gagawin namin 🙂 sorry for the unclear question mam 🙂

  29. Hi Nikki. Good to know that you won’t be walking all the way :p Please follow the commuting guide & read the rest of the comments section on how to get there by public transpo. Yes, you can walk from the gate of Palo Alto to the clubhouse and falls.

  30. Hi Kara,

I’m looking for a virgin place for swimming this coming April in Rizal area and I was hooked up on your blog. This place is very interesting!

Anyway, do you still have idea if they are giving the same rate this year? Have you been here lately? Is there any changes with the place?

Please let me know. Thank you in advance! 😉

  31. Hi Miss Kara! i was just wondering, are there a lot of people coming by lately? I mean, kung crowded ba yung place palagi? And btw po, great blog!

  32. Hi Jam, during my previous visits, the place wasn’t crowded at all, but it’s become more popular since then. I’m not sure how it is during Holy Week. They’ll be open from April 1-5, so I guess they’re expecting a lot of guests. You could try inquiring via their FB page.

  33. hello, my water pba dun waterfalls?think ds is a gud place for our family outing ds wkend 🙂

  35. From my experience, most resorts are crowded on weekends especially now that it’s summer. Sked niyo trip niyo ng Monday or Tuesday para siguardo. Try contacting: 0917-5573190 (their new number listed on their Facebook Page) for inquiries and reservations.

  36. Hi kara, ok ba ang falls kahit summer, i mean not dried up? And do they accept non-residents? Thanks so much.

    April

  37. Hey!

I just wanted to say na you have a very nice blog! Thank you for giving us the necessary details for going there. You’re very helpful! Keep up the awesome work and please do share more of your discoveries with everyone!

    Cheers!

  38. Hi! I’d like to bring my family this month here. Would you know if maganda pa rin yung falls? Do you mean sa Summer 2014 post mo na halos wala ng tubig? I would really like my daughters to experience waterfalls pero yung hindi naman mahirap puntahan. Kasi I myself am not a very active person and I’ll be bringing a 5 month old baby pa. I hope you have time to give me feedback in time for the occassion we’re planning for. Thanks!

  39. Hi Celine. The water at the falls wasn’t really strong when I visited in Summer 2014. Haven’t been there this year, but I’m assuming hindi malakas yung tubig especially now that it’s really hot. A lot of the really nice waterfalls I know require some hiking to get to and are usually crowded during summer, which might be difficult for you since you’re traveling with an infant. I would suggest indoor resorts like Ace Water Spa (which has a man-made waterfall) or private swimming pools like Luljetta’s Hanging Gardens and Spa in Antipolo, where you can enjoy the place to yourself. These are also more accessible with family-friendly amenities.

  40. Hi Ms. Kara Ask ko lang po kung paano pumunta ng Palo Alto from Taytay.. at ilang oras po ung magiging byahe.. private vehicle po kami 🙂

  41. Nice place! Do they allow cyclists to bring their bikes with them up to the falls? Or at least the cottages? 🙂

  42. Hi Roegan, there’s no hiking or bike trail going up to the waterfalls. The cottages are right beside the falls. It’s 249 concrete stairs up, some parts of which are steep. Technically, you could probably carry your bike up if you really wanted to. Or you could just park & lock your bike by the gated entrance near the stairs 🙂 Check out this post on biking to waterfalls by Outside Slacker.

  43. HI,

I’m just wondering if there’s new contact number for Palo Atlo.
I tried to call their number. 0949-8677021 and 0917-5573190 but the number is no longer active. However, 0905-5154778 is just ringing. Thank you appreciate your help.

  53. Hello kara! 🙂 Thank you for the information 🙂 Is it allowed to bring our dog with us? We can’t afford to leave him at home. He will stay in the cottage 🙂 Just for instance. Thank you so much

  54. Hi Kier, I’m not sure if pets are allowed here. Please contact them directly to inquire. I’ll try to compile a list of pet-friendly resorts one of these days 🙂

  55. Hi Kara! what is the possible accommodation lalo na if mag oovernight? meron bang mga room na pwede irent?

  56. Just found out that they have villas for rent now for P3,500/night (good for 4 pax with entrance fee). You can also stay overnight at the Clubhouse. P250 per person minimum of 30 pax + P700 cottage. First come first served. Added info to the post.

  57. Hi miss kara, mag pupunta kase kame dun bukas. Just wanna ask kung anong mga cottage ang meron sa waterfalls? And kung malamok po ba. Kasama ko kase baby ko. Salamat!

  58. Hi Lei, meron naman pong small cottages for rent dun malapit sa waterfalls. Cottage rate is P500 – P700 (good for 10 – 20 persons). Hindi naman po malamok nung pumunta ako, pero dala na rin po kayong insect repellent to be safe.

  59. Hi Ms. Kara. All numbers in your post are cannot be reached. Can we go there even without reservation?

    thanks
    Liezel

  60. Hi, Mary Ann Cruz, I would like to know the rates of the clubhouse? as a venue for an event. thanks

  61. would you know if they allow birthday parties with catering in their function hall? Thank you.

  62. Hi Leah, I’ve seen a wedding reception there, so yeah, they probably allow birthday parties. Please inquire directly for rates though. I put the contact info in the post. 🙂

  63. Hi! I just wanna ask. Open po ba ang Palo Alto Resort this Jan.1? Will be waiting for your reply. Tnx!

  64. Hello Ms. Kara! I just wanna ask if it’s safe to go there alone. I’ll be commuting lang from Cubao. Anyway, thanks for the info.

  67. Im from antipolo rizal. If i want to get there do I really need to go to cogeo gate 2? Before I can get there? Because if I’m not mistaken baras is near to tanay and tanay is far from cogeo. So what is the right way to go to alto? Pls let us know.

  68. Hello Wilma, this was the public transpo route suggested by an agent of Palo Alto. I usually just drive there. In the Sierra Madre area (Marilaque) the towns of Baras and Tanay are next to each other. Palo Alto is about 45 minutes away from Cogeo by motorcycle whenever I drive in the area.

  69. so based on your post, is it right for me to conclude na hindi ganon ka-amazing ang falls kapag summer pumunta kase barely a trickle lang ang water nito? Parang hindi worth the visit naman yata kung yung falls talaga ang main attraction for me to go there if ever…

  70. Hi Marie. Baka ma-disappoint ka lang sa falls kung yun lang pupuntahan mo ng tag-init. Pero kung habol mo swimming and bonding with friends tapos dun kayo sa pool area, ok lang naman. Warning: mas maraming tao pumumpunta pag summer for swimming and picnics, so minsan nagiging crowded na din siya.

  71. Hi mam kaya po b ng tryckle paunta dun sa palo alto ask q lng po sa tanay kmi dadaan

  72. Hi po Ms. Kara, ask ko lang po if meron po kayong updated na number nila. Kase we’re planning to have a team outing / bonding this May 20, e I need to reserved for the overnight stay at Clubhouse. I’ve try to call all the contact numbers na nasa baba ng article, kaso yung ibang out of coverage na tsaka ringing lang. Salamat po!

  73. Hi Arim. The numbers I listed are all I have since hindi pa ako nakakabalik dun. Try to check their Facebook Page to inquire.

  74. Hello! I would like to ask for some updated infos and rates? planning to visit Palo Alto this weekend. could you please send me the rates including the rooms available for overnight stays? thank you very much! 🙂

  75. Good day . Ask ko lang po kung derederetcho lang siya if galing masinag by motorcycle ? Thanks

  76. hi about sa palo alto falls open ba siya ng oct 20-21? and how much the rates wala ba kaung cottage along water falls?
please contact me in my gmail thanks

  77. Good day,
ask ko lang po if same 100 padin ung entrance sa waterfalls and clubhouse?
