Microtel UP Technohub, Quezon City

Microtel UP Technohub is Microtel by Wyndham’s 13th and latest hotel property in the Philippines located in the IT and commercial development of UP-Ayala Land Technohub in Quezon City.

I first got to see the property last year when it was launched and recently got a chance to stay here and in their Acropolis branch for the weekend.

With Ferdz of Ironwulf, Nina of Just Wandering and Microtel Marketing Communications Director Dandi during Microtel Technohub’s grand launch

Microtel, the Philippines’ largest international hotel chain, has branches located in key business and tourist hubs all over the Philippines, offering value-for-money top quality accommodations. I’ve stayed in other branches before, including Tarlac during our Lakbay Norte tour, Baguio after a climb to Mt. Pulag and Eagle Ridge Cavite during a visit to Tagaytay, so I welcomed the staycation opportunity in the city. The great thing about the folks at Microtel is they always have suggestions on fun activities for us to try, so it’s never just a hotel staycation.

Unfortunately, I missed the morning tour to nearby points of interest including Quezon Museum in QC Memorial Circle, Vargas Museum in UP Diliman & La Mesa Eco Park because of a family event. I live very near these spots and go biking frequently in UP, but I have actually not been to the two museums, so I should really check them out on my own sometime.

LOCATION

Microtel Technohub is currently the only hotel of its size along the stretch of Commonwealth Avenue in Quezin City. It’s located across the University of the Philippines Diliman campus, so it’s an ideal venue for academic conventions and business. In fact, their main function room is named Oblation in honor of the campus university. Business and leisure travelers will find the place convenient, as it’s within short distance from government centers, restaurants, shopping malls, BPOs and commercial establishments.

ROOMS

Microtel properties are well-known for their no-frills, back-to-basics, limited-service concept. Yet, they always manage to excel in terms of providing guests with clean, comfortable, and secure accommodations at value rates. Microtel UP Technohub has 120 clean and secure guest rooms located in a six-story structure fronting Commonwealth Avenue. The hotel chain is known for having chiropractor-approved mattresses, which always means a restful stay.

The spacious rooms (25 to 30 square meters) overlook the city or garden quadrangle and contain all the usual amenities you need for a comfortable stay including cable TV and wireless internet access. The standard suite has two queen beds while the executive suite has its own kitchen and living area. It’s good to know that the hotel has several handicap-friendly rooms, with wider hallways, lowered beds and railings inside the bathrooms.

HOTEL AMENITIES

Microtel by Wyndham UP Technohub’s modern design reflects the industrial and environmental elements present in the development area, but makes it a point to still have green spaces, like the garden quadrangle, resulting in a relaxing urban retreat.

The highlight is the beautiful roof deck pool that overlooks the Quezon City skyline, with an al fresco patio, which can be booked for social events. Since there isn’t any good swimming pool in the Quezon City area that I know of, I can imagine this would be a great place for a nautical-themed or pool party this summer. This April 2015, they’ll also be offering swimming classes for kids, so it’s a great excuse to hang out by the pool.

For those looking for a venue for corporate events, wedding receptions and social gatherings, Microtel has a large function hall above the restaurant that can accommodate 200-150 people. In addition, the hotel also has three smaller meeting rooms good for 30-40 persons.

DINING

Millie’s All-Day Dining is Microtel Technohub’s official dining facility, serving a wide range of international and Filipino cuisine. The restaurant was named after the mother of Jose Mari del Rosario, president and CEO of Microtel. It’s one of three in the country, with two other branches located in Microtel Batangas and Microtel Mall of Asia.

Bestsellers here include the Chicken Parmigiana, Pan-Seared Salmon, Grilled Blue Marlin, Hainanese Chicken Rice, Kare-Kare, Steaks (using local Wagyu Beef sourced from farms in Bukidnon) and Baby Back Ribs.

For dinner, we had Fried chicken, which came with a side salad, and fries plus mango panna cotta for dessert. I really like the book selection at Millie’s, which guests are free to browse through while eating.

WHY YOU SHOULD CHECK IN

I’d recommend Microtel UP Technohub to out-of-towners and business travelers looking for a place to base near key offices in the Quezon City area. Families and leisure travelers can enjoy rediscovering the city and head to nearby gardens and parks including the UP Diliman Campus, Quezon City Circle, Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife and La Mesa Eco Park and just relax in the hotel at the end of the day.

The hotel is also ideal for wedding parties! Quezon City is home to some beautiful wedding and event venues such as Fernwood Gardens, Gazebo Royale and Blue Gardens. To ensure that your entourage arrives on time, Microtel Technohub is the perfect base for wedding parties and preparations. During our weekend staycation, there were actually four wedding parties checked into the hotel to do all the make-up and pre-wedding photography.

I wouldn’t mind going back here for a pool party one of these days.
