Food Trip Tips: How to Maximize Buffets
Travel and hotel stays usually involve buffet breakfasts and meals. Here in the metro, eat-all-you-can buffets have become more popular for special occasions, celebrations and food events. As a foodie, it’s an exercise in self-control every time I enter a buffet restaurant. In case it isn’t obvious from all my previous food posts on what is supposed to be a travel blog, food is really my weakness.
Here are a few tips on how to make the most of eating in buffets so you don’t end up in a food coma every time.
Microtel South Forbes near Nuvali, Sta. Rosa
Nuvali is a residential / commercial complex and eco-destination in Sta. Rosa, Laguna. About an hour’s drive or so from the metro (depending on the traffic), Nuvali is a huge playground for various outdoor activities, including running, biking and wakeboarding. It’s also a family-friendly destination with restaurants, retail outlet stores and parks spread around the complex. While visitors can go around during day trips, Nuvali has become a popular destination for weekend staycations. If you’re participating in sports event in the area or want to maximize your weekend, it may be better to stay overnight in the area. One option for a relaxing hotel stay nearby is Microtel by Wyndham South Forbes, which is just minutes away from Nuvali.

Bike-Themed Cafes in Manila

Biking has really taken off, not just as a sport but as a lifestyle. Proof of this is the number of bike shops that have mushroomed all over Metro Manila catering to mountain bikers, roadies, fixies, foldies and everything else in between. Another proof of this is the number of cafes and restaurants that use bikes as their central theme.
For those who like to combine biking with food-tripping, here are some distinctly bike-themed cafes in and near Metro Manila. I’ve added some links from Outside Slacker to bike trails & routes you can hit near each establishment to work up an appetite or for post-ride food trips.

Road Trip Restaurants: Manila East Road

Aside from Marcos Highway / Marilaque, the Manila East Road is another popular destination for cyclists, riders and road trippers. This highway traverses the provinces of Rizal, Quezon and Laguna, starting from the junction of Ortigas Avenue in Taytay, Rizal all the way through towns surrounding Laguna de Bay and ends at a junction with the Pan-Philippine Highway in Calamba City.
Cafe Racer Diner, Cebu
For some reason, my Facebook newsfeed kept getting images of a concept diner in Cebu called Cafe Racer. I blame their targeted advertising, but the photos of cool motorcycles parked outside the cafe, chairs made from oil drums and different motoring murals made me just want to book a ticket to Cebu. As a rider, I just wanted to see the place for myself. Thanks to a work trip for another assignment, I got a chance to check the place out last January 2015.
Cozy Cafe in Antipolo: Eggs for Breakfast
Antipolo is known primarily for its scenic overlooking views. Being relatively near Manila, it offers an easy weekend getaway. Lately, more people have been visiting because of artistic spaces like Pinto Art Museum and dining destinations like Crescent Moon Cafe. During a solo ride one weekend, I tried out Eggs for Breakfast, a relatively new cafe that opened about 3 months ago.

Cebu’s First Craft Beer at Irie Gastropubliko
Irie Gastropubliko is a bar and restaurant in Cebu City that’s been around for a couple of years. Located on the Ground Floor of Skyrise 4 Building in the business district of Cebu I.T. Park, it caters mostly to those living and working in the area. They also get a lot of expats and craft beer enthusiasts from all over, who really seek out the place since it’s apparently the only place that you can try beers on tap from Turning Wheels Craft Brewery, Cebu’s first craft beer.

That’s it, Pancit: 10 Pinoy Noodle Dishes
Aside from the typical heartwarming soups and stews, one of the most popular comfort foods in Filipino cuisine is pansit or pancit (noodle-based dishes). Introduced into the country by the Chinese, pancit gets its name from the Hokkien pian i sit which means “something conveniently cooked fast.”
Noodles have been around a long time and have since been adopted into local cuisine. Familiar favorites include Mami, Bihon, Guisado, Sotanghon and Palabok, which can be found pretty much everywhere in the country. Whether it’s the type of noodle used, the variety of toppings that goes into the dish, a special sauce / secret ingredient or the method of cooking, different provinces manage to put their own unique spin on the dish. Here are a few of the more unique ones I’ve encountered during trips.

From the odd gate, the walkway leading to the garden was patched together with broken tiles and mirrors. Benches and tables scattered around the garden seemed set up for a mad tea party. Under the shroud of overgrown trees and plants, masks of deities carved in stone peeked from every corner.
