Product Review: Pertua Oil & Metal Treatment for Motorcycles

It’s been a while since I’ve gone on a good ride from the metro. Because of recent out-of-town travels, I haven’t been able to use my custom bike Fenrir much. It’s been sitting idle in the garage badly needing a tune-up. For the past month, my bike has been having problems starting and is always dying on me when I use it even for short distances, so most of the time I just use my reliable scooter if I need to go somewhere.

I really needed to set aside some time to get the carb checked, oil changed, swap the scrambler tires with its stock street tires and have some minor welding repairs done before I could use it. My husband’s Royal Enfield has also been due for maintenance for two months because of problems he’s been having with the chain and it’s been hard to schedule an appointment with RE’s mechanic in their warehouse in Mandaluyong because of their busy schedule.

Anyway, we were finally able to get motorcycle maintenance duties out of the way before the Holy Week Break, which is the best time to ride around and near Manila because the streets are empty.

We recently attended the media launch of Pertua Shot Oil & Metal Treatment for motorcycles and found out about this oil additive that’s supposed to improve engine performance. This is the same product for cars and larger vehicles that comes in 320 ml cans, but now comes in “shots” of smaller 50 ml plastic bottles specifically for motorcycles. One POMT shot can be mixed with 1 liter of your preferred oil brand when you change oil.

Pertua Oil and Metal Treatment is an invention of Filipino Engr. John Simon, a Mechanical engineer, Lubrication engineer and Metallurgy expert. It was patented in 90’s in United States and in the Philippines providing peak machine performance locally and globally. Since we were given some free samples of the product during the launch and both our bikes were really due for an oil change, we thought we might as well try it.

HOW DOES IT WORK:

I’m not really a gear-head when it comes to motorcycle maintenance and usually just leave it up to our mechanics. But as Pertua engineers explained in the simplest terms during the product launch, think of swimming in water versus swimming in mud. It’s easier to swim in water, right? POMT treats old oil in engines so it does not sludge inside, ensuring that engine parts run smoothly.

According to Pertua engineers, the oil and metal treatment has anti-friction and anti-oxidant actions. It’s Anti-friction, so it prevents metal-to-metal contact. Pertua virtually eliminates excessive friction that leads to power loss and damage.

Anti-oxidation prevents the oil from turning into sludge or dirty oil. It also prevents metal corrosion of the motor by removing oxygen. Essentially it cleanses the oil and cleans the metal parts of the motor. In short, it extends your vehicle’s reliability.

PRODUCT FEATURES:

During the media launch, we learned about the various product features of Pertua Oil & Metal Treatment.

  • Blends with any regular oil to match the Performance and benefits of other Full Synthetic brands
  • Increases horsepower and fuel efficiency
  • Guards against rust and overheat
  • Saves user on costly repairs and parts
  • Thoroughly cleans engine and lubricant system to reduce harmful emissions
  • Extends oil life up to 4 times the usual

FIELD TEST NOTES:

Take note, that I had a general tune up other and maintenance work done aside from changing oil, so I can’t attribute the better performance to just the oil additive alone. However, these were the things I noticed during our ride after using the product.

  • My bike is easier to start. Usually, I have to start Fenrir several times in the morning to warm it up, but it starts instantly now.
  • The engine did not die on me during the ride like at traffic standstills as it sometimes does.
  • Increased power. Normally Fenrir averages at speeds of around 60-80 and has felt very sluggish and under-powered. This is acceptable for normal traffic situations around the metro when you literally have to crawl anyway, but it’s kind of embarrassing when you’re out on weekend group rides in empty stretches and you end up looking like you can’t keep up.
  • After the oil change, I was able to reach speeds of around 100 kph and higher on certain stretches of the road. NOTE: It helped that there were no other cars on the road because of the Holy Week break, so there was really no traffic.
  • Better acceleration. I used to have a hard time overtaking in certain sections because the bike was under-powered, but it now feels easier. Braking is pretty smooth too.
  • Heat expelled from the engine, which is usually uncomfortably hot especially in traffic, has become relatively cool and tolerable.
  • The engine is not as noisy as it was before. It seems to run smoother.
  • Less vibrations on the handlebars.
  • The bike felt easier to drive and handle and I enjoyed the ride more.

VERDICT:

The Pertua line of engine and machine oil products aim to provide synthetic performance oil to the end user. They claim their products can keep your engine running like new, provide you with fuel savings, increased power, superior protection, better emissions and an oil service life surpassing the expensive Full Synthetic Oil Brands.

I can’t really give a verdict for long-time use yet since I just started using it, but based on what I’ve experienced so far, it seems to provide instant results. If you’re planning to get your oil changed anyway, it won’t really hurt to add this in, right?

Since it seems to have improved the performance of our two motorcycles (Suzuki Thunder 125 custom scrambler and Royal Enfield Classic 350), I kind of want to get another shot for my Yamaha Mio Fino, which is also due for maintenance & registration soon. Anyone with secondhand or third-hand vehicles will know how difficult and costly it is to maintain them, so any product that will extend their life and increase fuel efficiency is worth trying out.

If you’re still not convinced, you can check out the other features on Pertua published in motoring and mainstream publications including Top Gear, Auto Industriya, When in Manila and Rappler.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST & WHERE TO BUY IT?

A regular 320 ml can of Pertua Oil and Metal Treatment starts at P434.75/can. The POMT 50 ml shot for motorcycles costs P89.75/piece so that won’t really make a dent in your wallet if you decide to try it out. They’ve just started rolling out this product to select Pertua Dealers nationwide. You can also purchase Pertua items from their website store and online partners like Lazada.
